The Northern Circuit is the longest of the main Kilimanjaro routes and is often chosen by trekkers who want maximum acclimatization and broad mountain scenery. The official route page states that it offers the highest summit success rate, usually over 8 to 9 days, and gives wide-ranging views around Kilimanjaro, including the quieter northern slopes.

THE BUDGET:
9 Days from $2,350 per person
Price is an estimate only and is dependant on group size, age of children, time of year and your choice of camps.
After registration, begin trekking through forest on the western approach of the mountain. The first day is gentle enough to settle into the trek while still feeling like a true start to a major expedition. Overnight is at Forest Camp. The official route page notes Northern Circuit follows the Lemosho forest on its early stages.
Day 2: Forest Camp to Shira 1 Camp
Leave the forest and climb into moorland with wide views over the Shira Plateau. The route already feels quieter and more spacious than many of the shorter climbs. Overnight is at Shira 1 Camp.
Day 3: Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp
A steady trekking day across the plateau helps build altitude gradually. The open scenery and slower pacing make this a good acclimatization stage. Overnight is at Shira 2 Camp.
Day 4: Shira 2 Camp to Moir Hut
Continue higher across alpine terrain toward Moir Hut. The day gives more time for the body to adapt while keeping the route scenic and varied. Overnight is at Moir Hut.
Day 5: Moir Hut to Buffalo Camp
The trek begins curving around Kilimanjaro’s quieter northern side, one of the defining features of this route. The landscape feels remote and expansive, and this section is a major reason trekkers choose Northern Circuit. Overnight is at Buffalo Camp. This is an itinerary adaptation consistent with the official description of the route wrapping around the north side.
Day 6: Buffalo Camp to Third Cave
Continue on the northern slopes with broad mountain views and a quieter trail environment. The gradual profile keeps the acclimatization strong while preserving energy for summit day. Overnight is at Third Cave. This is an itinerary adaptation consistent with the standard 9-day Northern Circuit structure.
Day 7: Third Cave to School Hut
Climb steadily to School Hut, your summit base. Rest, hydrate, and prepare early for the night ascent to the roof of Africa. Overnight is at School Hut. This is an itinerary adaptation consistent with the standard 9-day Northern Circuit structure.
Day 8: School Hut to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
Summit in the early morning, reaching Uhuru Peak after one of the mountain’s best-acclimatized approaches. Then descend down the southern side to Mweka Camp for your final mountain night.
Day 9: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
Finish the trek with a forest descent to Mweka Gate. Certificates, celebration, and the drive back mark the end of a long, scenic, and rewarding Kilimanjaro journey.
