6-Day Marangu Route Trek

The Marangu Route is the classic hut-based Kilimanjaro trek and is often nicknamed the “Coca-Cola Route.” The official route page describes it as the oldest route and highlights its hut accommodation at Mandara, Horombo, and Kibo, which makes it distinct from the camping routes. It is popular for its directness, though the official guide also notes it offers less acclimatization time than longer options.

Day by day highlights

THE BUDGET:

6 Days from $1,750 per person

Price is an estimate only and is dependant on group size, age of children, time of year and your choice of camps.

Day 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

Begin the climb through rainforest from Marangu Gate, following a well-established trail under thick forest cover. The walk ends at Mandara Hut, where you spend your first night in mountain huts rather than tents.

Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

The forest begins to thin as you gain altitude and move into moorland scenery. The trail opens up with broader views and a stronger sense of the mountain’s scale. Overnight is at Horombo Hut.

Day 3: Acclimatization Day at Horombo Hut

An extra day at Horombo helps your body adjust before climbing higher. You can take a short acclimatization walk and return to the hut for rest. This added day is why the 6-day option is usually preferred over the shorter 5-day version. Inference based on the official guide’s note that Marangu has less acclimatization room and the 6-day version adds time.

Day 4: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

Continue into alpine desert, where the landscape becomes stark, open, and high-altitude in feel. This is a serious trekking day, but it positions you well for the summit attempt. Overnight is at Kibo Hut.

Day 5: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut

Start around midnight and climb slowly toward Gilman’s or Stella Point before continuing to Uhuru Peak. After celebrating at the summit, descend all the way back to Horombo Hut for a well-earned rest. This is the longest and toughest day of the trek.

Day 6: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

Descend through moorland and forest back to Marangu Gate, where your trek officially ends. After certificates and farewells on the mountain, transfer back to town.
